Good afternoon, Emory community. Today is Monday, September 22, 2025, and here are the latest updates from our campus.
Starting in the fall of 2026, Emory University will implement the Emory Advantage Plus program. This initiative ensures that all undergraduate students from families earning less than $200,000 annually will no longer pay tuition. Both new and returning students will be eligible for this program. Interim President Leah Ward Sears emphasized the university's commitment to making education accessible, stating, "When students sit at the kitchen table with their parents to discuss college, I don’t want finances to be a consideration."
In response to a recent executive order titled "Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity," Emory University has announced the discontinuation of its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs and the closure of related offices. Interim President Sears noted that the university must comply with new federal mandates affecting institutions that receive federal funding.
Emory University plans to redevelop a former auto garage and homeless shelter on Peachtree Street into over 50 competitively priced apartments for health care workers at Emory Midtown. This project aims to support nurses and technicians who are increasingly priced out of downtown Atlanta, while preserving much of the historic site's architecture. The initiative is still in the early planning stages and awaits approval for partial demolition to add windows to the structure.
Last month, a tragic incident occurred near the Emory University campus and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A police officer was fatally shot while responding to an active shooter situation. The shooter, who acted alone, was also killed. Fortunately, no civilians were harmed during the incident. Emory University has announced the discontinuation of its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs and the closure of related offices. Interim President Leah Ward Sears stated that this decision aligns with new federal mandates requiring institutions receiving federal funding to eliminate DEI initiatives.
In a significant leadership transition, former President Gregory Fenves has been appointed as Chancellor, focusing on national engagement and philanthropic efforts. Leah Ward Sears, a distinguished alumna and former Chief Justice of Georgia's Supreme Court, has stepped in as Interim President. The Board of Trustees has initiated a nationwide search for a permanent president.
On August 8, a tragic shooting occurred near the CDC and Emory University campus. DeKalb County Police Officer David Rose was fatally shot while responding to the incident. The shooter was also killed. Fortunately, no civilians were harmed. The university has since reviewed and enhanced its emergency response protocols to ensure campus safety.
Emory's Center for AI Learning, in partnership with the Rowen Foundation and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, launched the "AI + You" tour this summer. This initiative offers free AI training to Georgians, aiming to equip residents with skills to thrive in the evolving job market.

Emory University has announced a significant leadership change. President Gregory L. Fenves will conclude his tenure today, September 1, 2025. He will continue to serve the university as its sixth chancellor, a ceremonial role. A DeKalb County police officer was fatally shot while responding to reports of an active shooter near 1600 Clifton Road. The shooter, who acted alone, was also killed. Fortunately, no civilians were harmed, including 92 children present in a daycare on the CDC’s campus during the incident. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation. Our thoughts are with the officer's family and all those affected by this tragedy.

Emory's Health Innovation and Translational Informatics (HITI) Lab is hosting a week-long series focused on the future of AI in radiology from August 18 to 24. The event includes a Summer School on foundation models, a Symposium for idea exchange, and a Datathon tackling real-world datasets. Sessions will explore clinical integration, fairness, generalizability, and explainability in medical AI. Participants can register for individual events or the full week, with scholarships available.
On August 21, Emory's School of Medicine is hosting a Bioentrepreneurship Networking event from 4:30 to 6:00 PM at N600 HSRB-II. The event will feature guest speakers Ashley Cornelison and Eddie Lai, who will introduce Portal Innovations and its benefits as an incubator with turnkey lab space in Atlanta. On August 27, Emory's School of Medicine is offering an interactive Zoom workshop titled "Researcher Survival Skills: Pivoting Research" from 1:00 to 3:30 PM. Emory history graduate student Emilie Cunning has received a Moody Research Grant from the LBJ Presidential Library. She will conduct archival research in Austin this fall on transnational protest cultures in the US and UK during the 1960s and 1970s. Her dissertation project is tentatively titled "Transnational Protest Cultures: The Anti-War and Black Power Movements in Britain and the United States, 1960-1974."
Doctoral candidate Olivia Cocking has been awarded the Ernst Haas Dissertation Fellowship by the European Union Studies Association and the Emory University Women’s Club Memorial Fellowship. Her dissertation, titled "France After Empire: Migration, Citizenship, and Social Rights, 1946 – Present," examines migration and welfare in post-colonial France. Cocking is currently completing her research and dissertation write-up in Paris.
